Über die Aufführung, mit der das auf den Namen Goethe neugetaufte ehemalige Theater des Westens eröffnet wurde, möchte ich nur deshalb ein paar Worte sprechen, weil sie mir eines der schönsten Theatererlebnisse brachte, die ich in jüngster Zeit hatte: das Gretchen von Teresina Geßner. Ich hatte wieder einmal den Eindruck reifer Schauspielkunst. Man hatte einen schönen Abend verbracht, als man aus dem Theater ging. Man verzieh alles übrige. Man konnte es ja. Denn es war alles so mittelmäßig, daß man sich nicht freuen konnte, daß man sich aber auch nicht ärgerte, denn es gibt einen Grad von gleichgültiger Mittelmäßigkeit, wo alles Eifern aufhört.
